Supported by the Faith In Action Committee


Members of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee will present a program on "Understanding Islam and the Muslims and Their Challenges," with Dr. Marwan Tabbara, Alexandria Osborne, and Amanda Dentler.


Tuesday, June 3, 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 10441 Shaver Rd., Portage, Michigan


Dr. Marwan Tabbara was born in Lebanon, has been in the U.S. for 12 yrs, and lives in Kalamazoo with his wife and two children.  He is a neuropsychiatrist and Medical Director of Community Mental Health of St.Joseph County.  A member of Kalamazoo Islamic Center, he presented numerous lectures on Islam and participated often in interfaith dialogue after 9/11.


Alexandria Osborne was born in NYC and has been in this area for the past 23 years. She is a chemist by education and currently is an IT Service Manager at Pfizer.  Alexandria was raised Protestant but has been a Muslim since1987.  She is married to an Arab-American and they have one daughter, 15 years old.


Amanda Dentler is currently a student who has been studying Islam for some time and just a few weeks ago became a Muslim.  Amanda has agreed to participate in the question and answer period following the presentation.

Monday, March 31 at 10 a.m.  at Kalamazoo City Hall the Mayor will be holding a Press Conference to give his support for a Tolerance Resolution.   Click Here A request for this resolution was made by the ADC (on behalf of the Arab and Muslim community) to the Community Relations Board of the City (CRB).  The CRB had its first community Outreach meeting on February 26th  (see http://www.adckazoo.com/news-131.htm) .  The resolution  promotes racial justice and denounces hate in the City of Kalamazoo.  In addition, the resolution,  proclaims the,

 

 "Kalamazoo a City of Racial and Religious Equity, Appreciation and Tolerance and call upon each citizen to extend their hands in friendship, trust and understanding to all; and that further, the City of Kalamazoo urges all people to join us in strongly resisting all acts of hate or intolerance against all people, including people of the Islamic faith and perceived Arab descent and we call on citizens of the City of Kalamazoo to report hate crime incidents. We will not forget that we are all Americans and that now more than ever, United We Stand, Divided We Fall!". 

 

Please come this Press Conference to show our appreciation for the proactive stand the Mayor is taking on this matter.

ADC of Greater Kalamazoo to Sponsor Media Reception With WWMT Channel 3

On Tuesday, March 11, 2003, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee of Greater Kalamazoo will sponsor a media reception with WWMT/TV 3 and community members at the Channel 3 Station.  This event is part of ADC’s efforts to monitor and work closely with various local and national media outlets to ensure fair, balanced and unbiased coverage of Arab and Muslim Americans and the Middle East.  ADC emerged as a major local, national and international media resource in the aftermath of September 11.  Since then, ADC has been extremely vocal, and has used this relationship with the media to deal with issues proactively.  The upcoming media reception is onlyto selected guests who will receive an invitation.  For more information on this event, or if you are interested in attending, you may contact ADC at , or send a request to info.

Two peace marches to join on Sunday

The bells of Kalamazoo College's Stetson Chapel will begin ringing for peace at 1:15 p.m. Sunday as a call for gathering.

The Interfaith Coalition for Peace and the Kalamazoo Nonviolent Opponents of War (KNOW) have organized the event at the chapel and a march that will begin at the Federal Building and end at the chapel.

A second group of demonstrators will gather at the Islamic center at 1:30 p.m. on West Michigan avenue.

Both groups will march to the Stetson Chapel for an interfaith gathering at 2 p.m.

The gathering is a public expression of opposition to war in Iraq.

Planned at the gathering are brief prayers and readings in many faith traditions; a reading of a poem written by Stephanie Vibbert, a Kalamazoo College student and peace activist who was killed in an auto accident while returning from a rally in Washington, D.C.; music by Alfrelynn Roberts and Janlee Roberts; and speeches.

Principal speakers will be Garry Dorrien, chair of religious studies and college chaplain at Kalamazoo College; Ali Abunimah, a Chicago writer and commentator on Middle Eastern and Arab-American affairs; and Ron Kramer, representative of KNOW and Western Michigan University professor.

An anti-war paper presented by the Interfaith Coalition for Peace will be distributed to those who attend.

The entire program is expected to last an hour, and it isto the public.

MEETING WITH THE INS- Wednesday, January 15, 2003

The Immigration and Naturalization Service will be speaking to our community Wednesday,  January 15th at Noon sharp. Thediscussion will be at Western Michigan University Bernhard Center, Room 204 (Martin Luther King Room). The INS will describe the new special registration procedures for certain non-immigrants. 

The INS will have the forms available that are required for those that must register.  They can address your questions about the form and the entire process.  In addition, they can help you complete the paper work required for the registration.  This will help streamline the process when you go to the INS office, for those that still must  register.

Immigrants unlawfully arrested and detained during INS's "registration" program are planning to seek fair compensation under Federal Tort Claims Act in conjunction with the lawsuit filed by ADC and other plaintiff organizations against the INS and Attorney General Ashcroft.
