Support Hate Crimes Legislation Contact Your
Senators Issue: On May 1, 2003, Senators Ted Kennedy
(D-Massachusetts), Gordon Smith (R-Oregon), Arlen Specter
(R-Pennsylvania), and several others introduced the "Local Law
Enforcement Enhancement Act." The bipartisan legislation
is designed to end brutal, hate-motivated violence by providing law
enforcement with the ability to prosecute to the fullest extent of
the law all those who commit hate crimes. The legislation
would eliminate certain restrictions on federal jurisdiction to
investigate hate crimes. It also includes protections based on
sexual orientation, disability and gender to existing laws that
target violence because of race and religion and would Response:

Senate passage of the "Local Law Enforcement Enhancement
Act." NAAA- ADC encourages to you voice your support for
this hate crimes legislation by contacting your Senators to
encourage them to become cosponsors and active supporters of the
legislation. Tell your Senators that it is past time for
members of Congress to strengthen our national response to heinous
crimes. By expanding the current hate crimes law, the "Local
Law Enforcement Enhancement Act" would provide increased
protection for all Americans, including Arab Americans, from being
targets of hate crimes. The legislation is a cornerstone for the
civil rights community and joint efforts to fight discrimination and
promote civil rights. Passage of the proposed legislation
would strengthen the US civil rights community and demonstrate
ADC’s solidarity with leading civil rights groups as well as help
protect the rights of all Americans against discrimination, racism
